Memorial Day Pet Safety Tips

Common Memorial Day Hazards for Pets

Cookout Dangers

Backyard barbecues may be fun for humans, but they’re often full of temptations and hazards for pets.

  • Fatty foods and bones can cause digestive upset, pancreatitis, or choking.

  • Corn cobs, skewer sticks, and foil wrappers are commonly swallowed and may lead to dangerous blockages.

  • Hot grills and open flames can cause burns to curious noses and paws.

Loud Noises & Fireworks

Even if fireworks are not official events, neighborhood celebrations can lead to loud bangs, which can trigger anxiety or fear-based behaviors in pets.

  • Pets may try to run away or hide.

  • Sudden noises can cause elevated heart rates, shaking, pacing, or destructive behaviors.

  • Lost pets increase around Memorial Day due to noise-induced escapes.

Beach Hazards

Memorial Day is a popular time to visit the beach, but remember:

  • Saltwater ingestion can cause vomiting, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance.

  • Sharp shells, fish hooks, and jellyfish pose injury risks.

  • Strong waves or currents can overwhelm even the strongest swimmers.

  • Hot pavement and sand can burn paw pads in minutes.

When to Seek Emergency Veterinary Care

If your pet shows any of the following signs, seek veterinary care immediately:

  • Vomiting, especially after eating fatty or unusual foods

  • Collapse, excessive panting, or difficulty breathing

  • Burns or lacerations

  • Seizures or disorientation

  • Suspected ingestion of bones, skewers, or toxic foods
